Time For A New Phone

Nokia Lumia 900

Time For A New Phone
10th July 2013

The Nokia Lumia 900 is now over a year old and a few weeks ago the screen cracked after being heavily dropped, so the Nokia Lumia 925 had just come out, but that was unfortunately tied to one phone company and could not be bought outright. But now just days away on July 11th, Nokia will be announcing it’s new flag ship phone and it is rumored to have the same camera that has made the Nokia Pureview 808 an awesome device for photographers. This is what will replace the 900 for me, so here is what we know so far:

Images reported to be taken by the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1020 have been leaked by Microsoft Windows Phone Manager Joe Belfiore in advance of Nokia’s upcoming launch event on Thursday.  The Lumia 1020, previously codenamed the EOS, is getting a lot of attention for its impressive 41 MP camera. This photo below.

DONE! 3rd Marathon in 3 Countries in 6 months! WOO HOO!

The number of megapixels isn’t the only thing that’s getting Lumia 1020 this much buzz.  After all, the Lumia 808 also comes with a 41 MP sensor.  Additional features and advanced software on the 1020 are making it sound more like a camera-smartphone hybrid than a smartphone with a killer camera. One rumored feature on the 1020 is the ability to snap 5 MP and 32 MP shots simultaneously: the former for immediate sharing and the latter for printing or saving.  Plus, Belfiore’s leaked photos showed up at different sizes (2947×1658 and 2352×1568), suggesting that you can adjust the resolution of your images.  This would be a welcome feature for many photographers who frequently fill up their internal memory snapping pictures of kittens. Additionally, the Lumia 1020 will use Nokia’s Pureview sensor (also featured on the 920 and 808) to take high quality images in low light situations.  The 1020’s camera is also expected to include sophisticated (if not new) photography options like: Optic Image Stabilization, LED and Xenon flash, a “lossless zoom” feature, and settings for ISO, white balance, manual focus, and shutter speed.

These photos below show what it ‘may’ look like:

30th June 2013

As a member of a group of Facebook (yes unfortunately we still need to use it) that deals with Nokia phones and has specialized in photography from those phones, a member named Lucas issued a challenge for the month. Each day a new photo would be required depending on the subject of the day. For example, ‘texture’ or ‘family, so a few took this up and we were one of them and here is our photos from a Nokia Lumia 900 or 800 for this. So here are our 30 photos . . . .

Digital Cameras Revisited

Digital Cameras Revisited
4th May 2013

The photos below (labeled and untouched) are from the following cameras – Kodak DC240, Kodak Z700, Kodak Z812, Canon EOS D400 and Nokia Lumia 900 – and take one photo in the same direction to see the color and quality difference between them all. The Kodak DC240 had a long and distinguished career as it saw action in Antarctica, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Israel, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Australia, UK, USA, and Europe; the Kodak Z700 saw action in Australia, Thailand, India, UK, USA, France, Greece, Belgium; the Kodak Z812 saw action in Thailand, Belarus, UK, Egypt, France and Australia; the Canon EOS D400 has only seen action in Australia, Thailand, Egypt, Belarus and the UK; and the  Nokia Lumia 900 has only taken photos mainly in the UK and Belarus. Is there any reason to keep the DC240, the Z700 or the Z812? Not really, but They are always nice to revisit.

Samsung Galaxy Camera – it broke

Using the Samsung Galaxy Camera – it broke
14th January 2013

The camera had a short life as it arrived Saturday morning, and after setting it up and taking about 10 photos it broke on Sunday night! The Lens stopped moving, extending and closing the cover. A message is displayed saying the focus isn’t working (see photo below). So now I’m waiting to see how to return it and get a replacement, and when we do we will continue with the posts on this camera. At least now I can write about Samsung Customer Support 🙂

Using The Samsung Galaxy Camera – Part 1
13th January 2013

As you read in a previous post, the Samsung Galaxy Camera arrived on Saturday. I had seen the camera in a tech shop and had a look at it and liked the fully functioning Android 4.1, and could only take photos in the shop and view them on the cameras screen. I wanted to take it outside and see what it could do. But now I can, I have one. So, this will be a multi-part post of photos the camera took and click on them to see the full res versions and let me know what you think! Comment now and comment often as we want to hear your opinion.

“Is that a phone or a camera?” Well, it’s certainly not the best camera, nor is it a passable “phone,” but for this early adopter, at least, it was nice. It is not a bad little unit to hold and carry as well, and as its winter and I wear a wear a jacket, and it slipped easily into the pocket. It is very easy to use with a big screen android interface on the back. After unboxing I snapped a photo of a flower in the window and then took a walk around and snapped some more in the evening with the camera set on ‘auto night’, then a flower photo in daylight and a street scene in the day with a multitude color variations and shadows. . Samsung Galaxy Camera (with Android 4.1)
12th January 2013

The Samsung Galaxy Camera that we won by submitting a photo in a competition arrived today. The weight behind it is nice and just personally gives me quality feel to it. The camera comes in black and white, they sent me a white version. This camera is the first with Android 4.1 installed and what you have in your hand is small tablet with a large lens on the front. It has a memory card and a SIM card slot. Samsung hasn’t been shy in just trying anything in the tech area and seeing what sticks. Look at the Galaxy Note – who would have thought they would have sold 10m of those and started a whole new genre of device. Same for this camera. Will others follow? Its now on to fully charge and after go out and take photos, which will be posted here. So here is the Samsung Galaxy Camera being unboxed (photos by Nokia Lumia 900) and turned on for the first time, and in the next posts will follow photos taken with it.
